What is DLO cable?
A single conductor 2000 V diesel locomotive cable: finely stranded tinned copper per AAR 589, EPDM insulation, heavy-duty CPE jacket that resists sunlight, oil and abrasion. A polyester tape between the conductor and the insulation is what lets it be stripped cleanly. UL RHH/RHW-2 and CSA RW90. 10 AWG to 777.7 MCM. Also used in mining and data center UPS rooms.
Can DLO cable go in conduit?
Yes. DLO is suitable for wet or dry areas, conduit, ducts, troughs or trays. Sizes 1/0 and larger are cable tray rated. Maximum continuous conductor temperature is 90°C dry and 75°C wet.
Is DLO the same as railroad cable or locomotive wire?
Yes. DLO is diesel locomotive cable, also searched as locomotive wire and locomotive cable. Polar Wire carries it for locomotives, rail and transit, and mining. Other railroad cables exist for other jobs.
What is the ampacity of DLO cable?
It depends on how the cable is installed. Column (1) is three current-carrying conductors in raceway, cable or earth per NEC Table 310.16, and runs from 40 amps at 10 AWG to 493 amps at 646.4 MCM. Column (2) is a single conductor in free air per NEC Table 310.17, and runs from 55 amps at 10 AWG to 904 amps at 777.7 MCM. Both assume a 90 degree C conductor and a 30 degree C ambient.
What sizes does DLO cable come in?
Seventeen sizes, 10 AWG through 777.7 MCM: 10, 8, 6, 4, 2 and 1 AWG, then 1/0, 2/0, 3/0 and 4/0, then 262.6, 313.3, 373.7, 444.4, 535.3, 646.4 and 777.7 MCM. Sizes 1/0 and larger are cable tray rated. The part number is the size: DLO-2/0 is 2/0 AWG, DLO-535 is 535.3 MCM. Stranding, insulation thickness and outside diameter for every one of them are in the table on this page.
Where can I buy DLO cable?
From Polar Wire, on quote. Send us the size, the length and whether you want it on a reel or cut and terminated, and we will price it. We also build finished assemblies in DLO.
What are DLO cable specifications?
The table on this page is the spec. 2 kV as UL RHH/RHW-2 (file E18321), 1 kV as CSA RW90, tinned copper per AAR 589, EPDM insulation, CPE jacket, 10 AWG to 777.7 MCM. MSHA P-136-29. FT-4 and VW-1 flame tests. Cable tray rated at 1/0 and larger. Temperature 194°F dry / 167°F wet (90°C dry, 75°C wet).
How much does DLO cable cost?
DLO is quote only. It is not on the online store. Typical price is $4 to $32 per foot, depending on gauge. Smaller sizes sit near the low end, 777.7 MCM at the high end. Tell us the size, length, and whether you want it on a reel or cut and terminated and we will quote it.
