Frequently asked questions

If you need something that is not here, ask us: 8am to 5pm AKST, Monday to Friday.

What is boat cable?

Polar Wire Premium Boat Cable is boat cable: marine grade marine cable with tinned Class K copper conductors under a white TPE jacket. It is UL Listed as BC-5W2 under UL 1426, file E321438. Stocked in round and flat profiles, duplex and triplex. Rated 600 V, 105°C dry / 75°C wet.

What is boat wire?

Boat wire is boat cable. Same product. Polar Wire Premium Boat Cable is tinned Class K copper, UL Listed BC-5W2, built for marine service. Round and flat, duplex and triplex, 18 AWG to 6 AWG.

What is BC-5W2?

BC-5W2 is the UL boat-cable listing (BC-5W2) under UL 1426, file E321438. This is the listing Polar Wire Premium Boat Cable carries.

What is marine grade cable?

Marine grade cable is tinned copper, listed BC-5W2 under UL 1426, with a jacket that handles salt water, oil, and gasoline. Polar Wire manufactures Premium Boat Cable to that listing, file E321438. White TPE jacket. Rated 600 V, 105°C dry / 75°C wet. Construction meets and exceeds UL 1426, CSA, and ABYC.

What is the difference between duplex and triplex boat cable?

Duplex is two conductors, for DC. Red/yellow (ABYC safety colors) or red/black. Flat duplex: 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, and 18 AWG. Round duplex: 10 to 18 AWG, red/yellow only.

Triplex is three conductors, for AC. Black, white, and green. 10, 12, 14, and 16 AWG, round and flat.

What is round vs flat boat cable?

Round bends in every direction. Flat stacks in tight spaces, is built without fillers, and the jacket strips back. Polar Wire stocks both. Round duplex starts at 10 AWG. 8 AWG duplex is flat. Triplex 10 through 16 AWG is stocked round and flat.

Do you make 10/3 round boat cable?

Yes. 10/3 round is on the round boat cable table: BCR103-100 (100 ft) and BCR103-500 (500 ft). Black, white, and green. 104/30 stranding. That is 10 AWG triplex, AC standard colors.

What are the voltage and temperature ratings?

600 V. Temperature: 105°C (221°F) dry and 75°C (167°F) wet. Flexible in cold conditions.

What configurations and sizes are available?

Triplex: 10, 12, 14, and 16 AWG. Black, white, and green conductors. Round and flat.

DC duplex: 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, and 18 AWG. Red/black or red/yellow. Flat duplex covers that full range. Round duplex is 10 to 18 AWG, red/yellow only.

100 ft and 500 ft spools. 6 AWG and 8 AWG flat duplex are 100 ft spools.

What is "Class K 100% Copper Stranding" and why is it used in your wire?

100% copper, not copper-clad. On this cable the copper is tinned. Class K uses 30 AWG strands bunched into each size. Strand counts by size are in the Class K stranding comparison chart.

Is this cable flame-retardant or fire-resistant?

Yes. Polar Wire boat cable is VW-1 and CSA FT1. Those are the flame tests printed on the jacket.

How much does boat cable cost?

Boat cable is sold on the online store as 100 ft and 500 ft spools, not by the foot. Typical spool price is $41 to $1,236, depending on size and put-up. 18/2 100 ft sits at the low end. 10/3 500 ft sits at the high end. See the store for today's price: Boat cable.
