Frequently asked questions
What makes a wire marine grade?
UL 1426 BC-5W2, tinned Class K. File E321438.
What conductor colors does boat cable come in?
DC duplex is stocked red/black and red/yellow in 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16 and 18 AWG, which follows the ABYC color recommendations for positive and negative runs. AC triplex carries black, white and green conductors in 10, 12, 14 and 16 AWG. Both are 600 volts, rated 221°F (105°C) dry and 167°F (75°C) wet, on tinned Class K copper.
Round or flat boat cable?
Flat is built without fillers, which makes the jacket easier to remove and the wire easier to strip, and it stacks through a tight run. Round bends in every direction, which is what you want where the cable has to turn more than once. Both carry the same UL Listing and the same tinned Class K conductor, and both are stocked on 100 ft and 500 ft spools.
Which Polar Wire conductors are tinned?
Boat cable is tinned throughout and it is the marine listed line. Trailer cable is tinned Class K copper, with one exception that is bare, AUF-TC1014-7. Diesel locomotive cable is stranded tinned annealed copper per AAR 589. Arctic Ultraflex Blue is tinned from 18 through 10 AWG and bare at 8 AWG and larger, so in battery sizes it is the bare one.
Can I get a battery cable made to a measured length?
Yes, through two doors. A standard assembly goes through the cable configurator on the online store, which prices and checks out: pick the wire, the gauge, the length and a termination at each end. Anything with a drawing, a non-standard termination or a production quantity behind it goes to sales. Assemblies for retail customers carry no minimum, so one cable is a legitimate order.
Buy it, or have it quoted
Send the size, the length, and the profile. Polar Wire sells boat cable on spools, or builds the battery lead.
