Frequently asked questions

Will an SAE J1283 plug fit our machines?

Polar Wire jump start cables are assembled with field serviceable SAE J1283 connectors compatible with most heavy equipment manufacturers such as Caterpillar, Komatsu and CASE. The plug is keyed, so a cross polarity connection is not possible, and the set screw design allows full field service interchangeability.

What gauge and length should a heavy equipment set be?

Sets run 8 AWG through 1/0. Clamp to clamp, both 4 AWG and 2 AWG reach 25 feet; 2 AWG reaches 30 feet in the build that uses a harness. Gauge is set by the starting current and length by how far apart two machines can actually be parked, and the jumper cable guide works through both against engine size.

Are jump start cables covered by the Limited Lifetime Warranty?

The JSP SAE J1283 jump start cables carry the Limited Lifetime Warranty.

Can a yard standardize on one system?

That is what the modular sets are for. Start with a clamp cable or a connector cable, then swap in harness and clamp adaptor modules to suit each machine. Extra harnesses allow for multiple vehicle or fleet use, and connector cables extend the system as needed, so a yard buys one set of cables and a harness per machine rather than a set per machine.
